What is puppy and kitten wellness care? Puppy and kitten wellness care is a planned schedule of prevention services and products needed to protect your new family addition from disease and parasites. - Feline leukemia & FIV testing for kittens
- Vaccination
- Initiation of heartworm prevention, flea & tick prevention and home dental care
|

What vaccinations are needed for puppies?
DHPP |
Protects against distemper, hepatitis (liver disease), parainfluenza (respiratory disease) and parvo (very deadly GI disease in puppies). Given in a series of 3 vaccinations at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. Re-vaccination due a year later. Considered a core vaccination |
|
Leptosporosis |
Protects against 4 forms of this sometimes deadly disease that affects the liver and kidneys. It can be transmitted to humans. Our area is high risk for this disease. Given in a series of 2 vaccinations at 12 and 16 weeks of age. Then due a year later. |
|
Lyme |
Protects against this tick borne disease that affects the joints, kidneys, nervous system and heart. Causes severe pain and lameness. Our area is high risk (heavy tick population). Given in a series of 2 vaccinations at 12 and 16 weeks of age. Then due a year later. |
|
Bordetella / Parainfluenza |
Protects against several forms of respiratory infection (kennel cough). Needed for puppies that are boarded, groomed or encounter other dogs. Therefore, most puppies need it. Given in a series of 2 vaccinations at 8 and 12 of age. Then due a year later. |
|
Corona |
Protects against puppy viral diarrhea. Given in a series of 2 vaccinations at 8 and 12 weeks of age. No further vaccination needed. |
|
Rabies |
Protects against this deadly viral disease that attacks the nervous system. Can be transmitted to humans. Given at 16 weeks of age. Then due a year later. Required by state law. Considered a core vaccination. |
What vaccinations are needed for kittens?
Before vaccination, feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus testing should be done to ensure the kitten does not carry these viruses. Both are eventually fatal. |
|
FVRCP |
Protects against the highly contagious respiratory diseases rhinotracheitis and calici virus and panleukopenia (distemper). Given in a series of 3 vaccinations at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. Re-vaccination due a year later. Considered a core vaccination. |
|
Feline Leukemia (FELV) |
This deadly virus suppresses your kitten’s immune system leading to fatal infections or cancer. Needed for kittens that go outside, sit on porches or in open windows, have owners exposed to other cats (carry virus home) and in multi-cat households. Given in a series of 2 vaccinations at 12 and 16 weeks of age. Then due a year later. Most kittens should receive it. |
|
FIV |
Protects against feline immunodeficiency virus which is similar to human AIDS. Transmitted through bite wounds. Needed for kittens that go outside, especially fighters, and in already positive FIV households. Given in a series of 3 vaccinations at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. Then due a year later. |
|
FIP |
Protects against deadly feline infectious peritonitis that damages multiple organ systems. Needed for kittens in multi-cat households. Given in a series of 2 vaccinations at 16 and 20 weeks of age. Then due a year later. Corona virus testing is recommended before vaccination. |
|
Rabies |
Protects against this deadly viral disease that attacks the nervous system. Can be transmitted to humans. Given at 16 weeks of age. Then due a year later. Required by state law. Considered a core vaccination. |
Why so many shots? Puppies are born with maternal antibodies that initially interfere with the development of the needed immunity given by these vaccines. This interference can continue until the puppy is 16 weeks old. Therefore, the initial vaccinations must be “boostered” to fully protect the puppy.
What is parasite protection?
Intestinal Parasites
 |
Most puppies and kittens are born with roundworms and can also acquire hookworms from their mother’s milk. In addition, they are susceptible to hookworms, whipworms (dogs only), tapeworms, giardia and coccidia which are very common in their environment. Intestinal parasite infection in puppies and kittens can be fatal. Roundworms, hookworms, giardia and tapeworms can be transmitted from your puppy or kitten to you and your family. Protection is provided by Fecal Examination and needed de-worming at the 8 and 12 week old wellness visits. |
Heartworm Disease
 |
This fatal disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and inhabits the heart and lungs of infected puppies and kittens. Chronic coughing and breathing difficulty occur. It t is a serious problem in our area. Protection is provided for puppies by starting your puppy on prevention medication at the 8 week old wellness visit. If not started by 20 weeks, a heartworm test is required to ensure the puppy is heartworm free before the prevention can be given. Protection is provided for kittens by starting your kitten on prevention medication at the 16 week old wellness visit. Prevention should be given year round. |
Fleas and Ticks
 |
Fleas and ticks are widespread in Southern MD. The blood loss caused by a severe flea infestation in a young puppy or kitten can be fatal. Ticks can transmit disease such as Lyme and Ehrlichia to you, your family, your puppy and possibly to your kitten. Prevention medication is the only protection against them. We apply 1 FREE dose of the monthly topical product Advantix (for puppies) and Advantage (for kittens) at the 8 week old wellness visit. Advantage protects against fleas. Advantix protects against both fleas and ticks. Purchase a year’s supply and save 20%! |
Puppies and kittens have teeth too! Don’t forget that your puppy or kitten has teeth that need to be cared for as do your own. Dental disease affects up to 80% of the adult pet population. But your puppy or kitten does not need to be part of this statistic if you begin home dental care during your puppy’s or kitten’s first months to prevent plaque and tartar build up that eventually cause periodontal (gum) disease. We offer a number of home care products: Hills Teeth diet, C.E.T. Chews, C.E.T. Oral Rinse, C.E.T. Toothpaste, Oxyfresh Oral Hygiene Solution, and Oravet Barrier Sealant. All these products help to reduce plaque and tartar formation on the teeth to prevent dental disease. |

|
Why spay or neuter? Tragically, millions of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized each year. Therefore, if you love pets, the kindest thing you can do for puppies or kittens is to have your own spayed or neutered. Generally performed at about 5 to 6 months of age, spaying or neutering also reduces the risk of your puppy or kitten developing cancer and other serious diseases in adulthood. It will also keep your puppy healthier and reduce unwanted behaviors such as roaming, inappropriate elimination and mounting.
What is microchipping? Microchipping is the insertion of a permanent identification chip under the skin in case of accidental separation. All pets should be microchipped to guarantee a safe return home. |
