OWRC Excursion
Dr. Forrest is a veterinarian volunteer for the Orphaned Wildlife Rescue Center (OWRC) in Lusby, MD. The organization, headed by R. G. Wexler, rescues and rehabilitates injured, orphaned and sick mammals and birds in Calvert, St. Mary’s and Charles counties. The center is one of five wildlife facilities in the state. Wildlife referrals come from the public, local veterinarians, animal control and the police.
The Center operates by volunteer staff effort and public and private donations. One of the center’s more recent donations is a large research vessel donated by an Annapolis developer. Mr. Wexler invited Dr. Forrest and a limited number of our staff an opportunity to check out this most recent donation and also on several rehabilitated osprey that had been released back into their habitat.
Dr. Forrest and staff (Dr. Cabral, Anne, Kim, Pam, Beccy, April, Scott, and Juan) boarded the boat at Calvert Marina in the Solomons Harbor. We left the harbor and headed into the Chesapeake Bay. Out boat captain took us south on the Bay almost to Point Look- Out State Park in St. Mary’s County. We then came back north and headed up the Patuxent River to Broome Island in Calvert County. We ate lunch on Broome Island, and then stopped for a swim in the Patuxent. Lastly, we made the check on the released osprey. They are in good health and have readjusted to their nests and environment well. Great job OWRC!
