Hospitalization and Critical Care

|
Pets that require hospitalization will be cared for in our clean, comfortable facility. Critically ill patients often require intravenous catheterization with IV fluids and medications.
The IV catheter allows administration of fluids for rehydration as well as IV drugs which are more rapidly and reliably distributed internally to perform their intended functions. Most pets are hospitalized on IV's until they have recovered to the point that they are able to eat and drink and hold down oral medications.
IV fluids require professional administration by a member of our nursing staff. Fluids must be monitored closely to be certain the correct amount is administered over the proper period of time. We use special infusion pumps to maintain the flow and precisely deliver the fluids and medications. |

Oxygen Therapy: Pets with pneumonia, heart disease, shock, or many other diseases benefit from therapy with oxygen. Unfortunately, most pets will not cooperatively wear an oxygen mask, which means they require specialized equipment to deliver this important treatment.
We provide any needed oxygen therapy with a specialized cage that delivers humidified oxygen to support their breathing for as long as needed during their hospitalization.

Cancer Treatment: Cancer is common in pets, and the rate increases with age. Dogs get cancer at roughly the same rate as humans, while cats get fewer cancers. Cancer accounts for almost half of the deaths of pets over 10 years of age.
With proper treatment for certain types of cancer, many pets can experience a remission from their symptoms of cancer. This means that the pet feels and looks normal, as if they did not have cancer at all.

In House Laboratory: Our in house laboratory allows us to monitor hospitalized pets with tests to determine their response to therapy. With fast, reliable results we can quickly adjust treatment plans to provide the appropriate care for critical patients. |
 |
TLC: Tender loving care is very important in speeding patient recovery. Therefore, it is a critical part of every patient’s treatment plan at St. Mary’s Veterinary Hospital.
